Specialty coffee being prepared — what makes the best coffee for yachts | Onshore Roasters

What Makes the Best Coffee for Yachts?

Not all coffee is created equal — and when you are serving it aboard a superyacht, the difference between good and exceptional is immediately obvious. Charter guests who are paying thousands per day notice the details, and coffee is one of the easiest ways to elevate the entire onboard experience.

Freshness Is Everything

Coffee begins losing its peak flavour within weeks of roasting. The pre-ground, vacuum-sealed coffee sold by most marine provisioners has often been sitting in warehouses for months. By the time it reaches your galley, it is already past its best.

The solution is simple: buy from a roaster who roasts to order. When your beans are roasted the week they ship, you get the full spectrum of flavour — the chocolate notes, the fruity acidity, the caramel sweetness that makes specialty coffee special.

Choosing the Right Blend for On Board

Different situations call for different coffees:

  • Crew coffee — Needs to be robust, reliable, and flexible enough for espresso, filter, or French press. A medium-roast Brazilian blend with chocolate and nut notes is ideal. This is our Crew Beans.
  • Guest and owner service — Should be more refined. A lighter roast showcasing origin character — bright acidity, fruit notes, complexity. Our Guest Beans blend Colombian and Brazilian beans for exactly this purpose.
  • Late-night and caffeine-sensitive — A proper Swiss Water Process decaf maintains full flavour without the caffeine. Our Decaf Beans are chemically free and indistinguishable from regular coffee in a blind tasting.

Storage Tips for Yachts

Even the best coffee can be ruined by poor storage. On board a yacht, you are dealing with heat, humidity, and salt air — all enemies of fresh beans.

  • Store whole beans in an airtight container away from direct sunlight
  • Keep bags sealed until ready to use — do not open until your current bag is finished
  • Grind immediately before brewing for the best results
  • Use beans within 4-6 weeks of the roast date
